Wild berry picking and caves for giants
Ásdís Ragna Einarsdóttir, a medical herbalist, has lived all her life in the village of Keflavík, situated on the Reykjanes peninsula, South Iceland.
The small coastal village of Keflavík is the first thing that greets weary travelers arriving at Keflavík International Airport. Ásdís is married to Stefán Ragnar Guðjónsson, and together they have three children, Kamilla Birta, Guðjón Pétur, and Egill Örn.
What’s the best thing about the region?
“The best thing about the region is that most of my family and friends live here, and it‘s a good place to raise one‘s children. The children can choose between many different sporting activities in their free time, and the schools are great.“
Where’s the best place to go for a little relaxation?
“I love spending time exercising outdoors, surrounded by nature. When I need to clear my mind, I take long walks along the beachfront in Reykjanesbær (Keflavík and the neighbouring village of Njarðvík). On the way, you have the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains and Snæfellsjökull glacier, West Iceland. I also enjoy going to the swimming pool to unwind in the hot tubs and the sauna.”
Name four interesting things one should not miss when in the region:
1. I would definitely recommend a trip to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa when visiting Reykjanes. Nothing beats relaxing in the pale blue water, with a silica mud mask on your face, while enjoying a green smoothie. Afterwards I advise people to try the delicious chicken salad served at the spectacular Lava restaurant.
2. I also recommend a drive to Garðaskagi, a beautiful beach where one can enjoy the most amazing sunsets. There’s also a lovely coffee shop nearby that serves tasty Icelandic waffles topped with whipped cream and homemade jam.
3. If you enjoy the outdoors, I suggest you hike up Þorbjörn, a small mountain near the village of Grindavík. It’s a beautiful walk, and children can easily do it as well. Once you’re up on the top, you have the greatest panoramic view over the area.
4. Only a stone’s throw from Þorbjörn, you’ll find a small forest called Sólbrekkuskógur which, in late summer, early autumn, is full of crowberries. You can also try picking some wild, Icelandic herbs.
What should those travelling with children see/do in the area:
“Children love to visit the Viking World Museum in Reykjanesbær and Skessuhellir (The Cave of the Giantess). Most children also like spending time at the swimming pool which features exciting waterslides.”
Best restaurant/café in the Keflavík area?
“My favourite café in Keflavik/Reykjanesbær is Café Duus, located down by the harbour. The best one is Vocal restaurant, where you can order lovely dishes made from local products.”
Describe the perfect Saturday night out in Keflavík:
“I never really go out in Keflavík, but I guess you could hit the movie theatre or listen to some live music at Paddy’s, the local pub.”
