Film crews working on the latest instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast 8, are currently filming scenes for the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster in the small fishing town of Akranes in West Iceland. The scenes in Akranes are shot in the harbour area and on the grounds of the abandoned cement plant, which is located by the harbour.

But in addition to providing a backdrop to the film, the town of Akranes and its inhabitants are providing all kinds of other assistance: Yesterday we reported fishing vessels were moved out of the harbour to make space for the filming. Today we learn that residents in nearby homes have been asked to crank up their outside lighting and leave all lights on to help with the filming!

The local news site Skessuhorn reports that residents living close to the abandoned cement plant received a letter asking them for help with the filming, by leaving all lights on, even during the day: “We know this sounds strange,” the letter read, “but apparently this will help with the filming of the movie.”

Skessuhorn reports that the film crews are currently preparing for the filming of the movie and that the actual shoots will take place later this week.
