A herd of wild reindeer was spotted wandering through the village of Egilsstaðir, East Iceland, on Monday morning. Ívar Ingimarsson, the owner of Birta and Olga Guesthouse in Egilsstaðir and a former professional football player who played with English Championship team Reading, managed to photograph the herd while the animals grazed on a pasture in the town’s centre.

Ívar told Morgunblaðið newspaper that many passers-by stopped their cars in order to photograph the animals and that foreign guests greatly enjoyed the chance meeting.

“This happens quite frequently and Egilsstaðir has become known as the reindeer capital of Iceland. It’s pleasant to encounter these wild animals up close and personal. They are very calm and friendly,” he said, adding that local residents maintain that the reindeer come to town in order to do some shopping.
